THE SUSTAINABLE & ECOLOGICAL BREEDING OF STURGEON

DESIETRA Aquaculture combines all reproduction, breeding and production stages under one roof and is therefore an absolutely sustainable company. The facility in Fulda is divided into four areas:

 

  • Breeding
  • Mast with holder
  • Production
  • Own laboratory

 

By selecting the strongest and healthiest sturgeons, we gradually refresh our breeding stock. After reproduction, the sturgeon larvae grow up to a certain size in our breeding tanks. As soon as the sturgeons are large enough, we bring them to external ponds or to our facilities in other EU countries for growth.

We feed our sturgeons exclusively with high-quality fish food. We make sure that the feed is free of genetically manipulated soya. We do not use hormones or antibiotics in the breeding and fattening of sturgeons. The feed is produced especially for our sturgeons in Germany and Belgium. The quality and composition is regularly checked by independent laboratories. The manufacturers are aware of our high demands on sturgeon feed. They make sure that we only get the best quality. Depending on the sturgeon species, the fish need 5-15 years to reach the status “caviar ripe”. After 2-4 years we determine the sex of the fish by ultrasound and during this time male and female grow up together. After determining the sex we separate the fish. We sell male sturgeon to fishing clubs or to private individuals. If the female sturgeons are “caviar ripe”, we bring the fish back to Fulda from the external pond facilities. Here we keep the fish separated according to species, in order to refine the roe in the last weeks.
